The Studierendenwerk (Student Services) is an independent public body responsible for the social and cultural support of students. It is NOT the university administration. Every student pays a Semesterbeitrag, of which a large portion goes to the Studierendenwerk. Key Responsibilities: 1. Student Housing (Wohnheime): They manage subsidized dormitories. In 2026, the housing crisis makes these spots highly competitive. You should apply for a Wohnplatz as soon as you have applied to a university - do not wait for the admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid). 2. Mensa & Cafeterias: They provide affordable meals for students. You usually pay with your Studierendenausweis, which can be topped up with cash or via an app. 3. Social & Legal Counseling: They offer free advice on financing, pregnancy, and legal issues (exam law, tenancy law). If you are in financial distress, ask for the Notfonds (emergency fund). Semesterticket and Refunds: The Studierendenwerk manages the Deutschland-Semesterticket. This allows you to use all public transport in Germany. If you are on an internship abroad or have a disability that grants you free transport, you can apply for a Rückerstattung (refund) of this fee. International Students: They are often the first point of contact for internationals. They organize "Tutor Programs" and "International Stammtische". Their welcome letters often contain important information about your Krankenversicherungsnachweis (proof of health insurance) required for enrollment. Psychological Counseling (PBS): Many Studierendenwerke offer free and confidential psychological counseling services (Psychosoziale Beratungsstelle - PBS) for students dealing with stress, anxiety, or other mental health challenges. This service is crucial for student well-being and often has shorter waiting times than external therapists.
