The Bürgergeld (Citizen's Benefit) is the central state support system for people who are able to work but cannot cover their living costs. It replaced the old "Hartz IV" system in 2023 and has seen major updates for 2026. What is this office for? The Jobcenter manages Bürgergeld. It is NOT for students (see BAföG) or pensioners (see Sozialamt), but for the "erwerbsfähig" (employable) population between 15 and retirement age. If you lose your job and your unemployment benefit (ALG I) runs out, or if your salary is too low to survive ("Aufstocker"), this is where you go. Key Changes in 2026: 1. Stricter Sanctions: The "trust period" is over. If you refuse a reasonable job offer or fail to appear at appointments without a sick note, your benefits can be cut by 10% to 30% much faster than before. "Totalverweigerer" (people who refuse any work) can temporarily lose the standard rate entirely, keeping only rent payments. 2. Kooperationsplan: The old "Eingliederungsvereinbarung" is replaced by a "Kooperationsplan". It is less legalistic but still binding. It sets out the steps you and your case manager agree on to get you back into work. 3. Housing Costs & Karenzzeit: For the first 12 months (Karenzzeit), the Jobcenter covers your *actual* rent, even if it is "too expensive". In 2026, heating costs are scrutinized more closely. After the waiting period, you might be asked to move to a cheaper apartment ("Kostensenkungsaufforderung") if your rent exceeds the local "Angemessenheitsgrenze". 4. Asset Protection (Schonvermögen): You are allowed to keep significantly more savings than in the past. In the first year, up to 40,000€ for the main applicant is protected. Important to Know: The money is transferred in advance (at the end of the month for the next month). If you start a job, you must report it *immediately*. A common trap is receiving a full month's benefit and a full month's salary in the same month – you will have to pay the benefit back, often causing debt.
